Sack The Gord?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Or so we're told by people far smarter than the average Scottish football fan. Hell, let's be honest here, anyone stupid enough to pay £25 to watch 90 minutes of the unadulterated pish that passes for top level football in this country can't be the sharpest tool in the box. Don't know why I still do it.

So here we are, 90 minutes into a new season, and already our manager is facing calls for his head. Another 90 minutes of dross, another 90 minutes without goals, and another 90 minutes of baffling tactical decisions that leave 90% of the fans scratching their heads in disbelief and wondering why Paul Hartley is still on the park. Only 90% of fans though. The other 10% have left early or gone for a pie.

Tune into any of the radio phone-in's that masquerade as in-depth footballing analysis in this country and the message is the same. Sack The Gord! Browse your way through 18 pages of Celtic Minded internet message board threads and you'll find that buried away amongst all those mind numbing posts about your favourite sweeties when you were a wean, or which TV celebrity would have her face left like a painters radio if you only got the chance, there is a consistent message. Sack the Gord! The Orcs must be laughing up their sleeves at us. Assuming their sleeves haven't yet been flogged by their chairman on Ebay.

Now here at Paranoid Tim we don't believe in sacking managers lightly. If a manager is to be set free to roam the high seas of footballing unemployment we expect him to have fucked up in a major way. If we're wanting to put our old ticker through those heart stopping moments of the club being linked with managerial diddies like Bryan Robson or Ruud Gullit then we require first that said heart stopping moments are preferable to what was on offer from the managerial diddy we've just got shot of. And that, dear reader, is the question to be answered. Does Gordon Strachan really fall into this category?

Are we at the moment yet when being linked with Glen Hoddle is preferable to wearing a neck brace from watching a Lou Macari inspired Celtic side? Have we reached the point where the rumour of Dave Bassett in charge at Celtic Park is a more attractive option than watching John Barnes trying to convince all and sundry that he really does know what he's doing? I don't think so. But what do I know?

We're now in our third term with the wee ginger one at the helm. Six domestic trophies have come and gone. Celtic have claimed four of them. Back to back league titles, one each of the cups. In Europe, our first season catastrophe in Bratislava was followed up by a second season run to the last 16. It hasn't always been pretty, but then football never is. Some of the best football I've witnessed as a Celtic fan came under Liam Brady's tenure. The same Liam Brady who failed to pick up a single trophy in the time it's taken WGS to win four. Tommy Burns packed his team with talent and played free flowing football that could be a joy to watch. He won a single Scottish Cup. And even that was won over 90 minutes of the type of football last seen during a game of Emylyn Hughes International Soccer on the ZX Spectrum. It was also won before most of the talent arrived.

No, I'm not saying that we can only win by playing a poor style of football. Yes, I am dissappointed in the dross we're having to endure. But the point is this. Trophies are won by winning games, not by how you play. And WGS has delivered a side that has won games and, with them, trophies.

That isn't to say that Paranoid Tim thinks all is rosy in the Strachan garden. Far from it. There are concerns there, and some serious ones at that. For a start, the wee man has a very patchy record in the transfer market.

Of his first season signings, only Boruc and Nakamura have done the business consistently. Mark Wilson has been unfortunate with injuries and should develop into a decent fullback, while Zurawski can still offer a lot to the hoops - if he can stay fit and regain his confidence. Of the rest, Keane and Dublin were short term deals to fill gaps. Telfer did a decent job when allowed to, while Du Wei, Camara and Virgo will probably be names forever mentioned in the same breath as Scheidt and Martin Hayes. And did we actually sign someone called Aliadiere or was that just a fleeting dream? Giving Strachan the benefit of the doubt on Dublin, who is a "does what it says on the tin" kind of player, there's a success rate of about 60%.

Season two, however, is a completely different story. Jarosik, Gravesen and Miller are already cast into the flames of flop-hell. Hartely, Riordan and Pressley look like following. Gary Caldwell was unlucky with his injury. He had a consistent start to the season, but was hauled over the coals for one bad game in Portugal. Sno has potential. Brown is backup to Boruc. Of all last seasons signings, only Naylor and JVoH made any kind of real impact. Even with Sno included as a success, the majoriy of our new players contributed little to the cause.

And so onto this season. It's clearly too early to comment on the signing of Donati, McDonald, Brown and Killen, but there are signs there that they can each contribute to the coming season. Then again, I did say that about Gravesen and the like. Overall, WGS has a pretty poor record in the transfer market. For every Boruc, there seems to be a Virgo. For every Nakamura, a Gravesen.

The result of all this transfer activity is another source of concern. We now have a bloated squad the like hasn't been seen since the Dick Advocaat "one team for Europe, another for the SPL" era. You remember? Back in 2000/01? All those sad media hacks telling us how Celtic were doomed. Rangers...ascendency...5 years behind...superior squad...etc. Cue Celtic strolling to an easy title, while it all fell apart across the city. Ring a bell?

WGS has indeed assembled a strong squad. We could field a team consisting of Mark Brown, Gary Caldwell, Darren O'Dea, Steven Pressley, Bobo Balde, Thomas Gravesen, Evander Sno, Jari Jarosik, Derek Riordan, Chris Killen and Kenny Miller and only one of them could possibly be considered a first team choice. And we're not even sure about him anymore. This doesn't even include the youngsters who are banging at the door, awaiting there chance. We've some of the most talented youngsters in the country. Are they going to get their chance with this size of squad?

Competition for places is a good thing. Having so many players sitting on the bench or in the stands week in week out is not. Some of these guys are sucking vasts amounts of money out of our club and contributing little in return. The squad needs trimmed, and quickly. We've still a few weeks to bring in new players, but we can't possibly do that without getting rid of the deadwood already there. Unless, of course, its some cover for the full backs. Having only one full back for each side isn't considered good practice, Gordon.

The other major concern is tactical. We've had two seasons of our 4-4-2 formation and while we've won two league titles with it, the problems are there for all to see. Page 67 of the 'Big Book of Tactics' clearly states that if you want to stifle Celtic all you need to do is find a couple of pluke-laden teenagers from your youth setup to double up on McGeady and Nakamura and you're sorted. It doesn't take any real tactical genius to work that one out. Of course that leaves any team employing this tactic a bit short in the middle, but that isn't really a problem anymore in this post-Stan Petrov era. Official stats from last season show that Celtic managed to get central midfielders into the opposing teams box on only three ocassions. And two of them were Neil Lennon waddling up to argue with the ref.

Now, it could well be that the signing of Scott Brown will solve this particular problem. He's a player who likes to burst forward into the box and pick up on the scraps. But then so is Paul Hartley. Perhaps we can solve this problem with our new midfield. Donati's passing gives us something we've been lacking for a long time - a midfielder with a bit of vision and the ability to make a killer pass. Combined with Browns running and willingness to get forward, and the flair of Nakamura and McGeady, there is the making of a decent midfield unit that should be able to cause any team problems. We didn't see it against Killie, but it's early days yet.

I'm assuming of course that Donati doesn't get subbed ahead of people who are contributing nothing each week.

One final issue with our tactics. This is an old gripe, and one that's been used against many a manager over the last few decades of following Celtic. Now, perhaps I'm not the footballing experts that the likes of Strachan and O'Neil and McNeil and Venglos and the rest are, but it seems to be self evident that you get the best out of a player when you play him in his correct position. There's no point in buying, say, Paul Hartely - a noted attacking central midfielder - and deploying him down the right, or even worse, in the Neil Lennon role as we saw yesterday. He's an attacking midfielder. His strength is getting forward into the box, not standing on the halfway line stroking his beard while play rages on around him. Similarlly, Jiri Jarosik will never be a forward. Ever. Give it up. Gary Caldwell isn't a right back and Darren O'Dea will never make a left back. Oh and Ross Wallace. I know you've punted him, but Harold Brattback made a more convincing wingback than Ross did left back. Just thought I'd mention it Gordon.

The last problem I have with our small Ginger leader is motivation. It has become increasingly apparent that our manager is having trouble motivating his players. Whether this is down to problems within the dressing rooms (perhaps because we have a massively bloated squad?) or that he simply lacks the ability to fire the players up for the game I don't know. What I do know is that the guff I watched last season, and the guff I watched yesterday, is not good enough. There is a lack of urgency to Celtics play. And lack of passion. And this is mirrored by a lack of passion in the Stands. The atmosphere in the ground yesterday was dreadful for a flag day at Celtic Park. People are turning up because they've already paid for their season ticket, not because they're excited about the footballing feast on offer. And this lack of passion is what may prove to be our downfall this season. You don't have to be any kind of tactical genius to win the SPL. All you need to be able to do is motivate your players. And on this score Wattie is far ahead of Strachan.

So where does this leave us? We've a manager who's won back to back league titles, 4 trophies in two seasons, taken us to the last 16 of the Champions League and yet still the calls come for him to be sacked. Outside of Madrid, where else would this happen? And Where do these calls come from? The issues I've already mentioned contribute, I'm sure. But there is also a sizeable and vocal section of our support who have NEVER wanted Strachan at the club - for whatever reason - and who will continue to oppose his tenure as our manager regardless of how many league trophies the small ginger one delivers.

But the question remains. Are we at the stage where booting Strachan is preferable to being linked managerially to Bryan Robson or Terry Venables? Is it so obvious that our season is a write off that we're better off just making the change now? Has he fucked up enough that he should be sacked?

Nowhere near it.

Yes there are issues with Strachan and the crap we're having to endure on the pitch. But surely a man who has won back to back titles deserves the chance to defend his title and to fix the problems that exist. Are we so fickle now that a draw on the first day of the season is sufficient reason for sacking a manager? We're in for a long hard season if that is the case. We may be in for one anyway, but those in charge of our dressing room at least deserve the chance to prove the naysayers wrong.

For what it's worth, here at The Paranoid Tim we have some very serious concerns over WGS as manager, and we don't believe that our current manager will still be in the East End of Glasgow come the start of season 2008/09. There is a growing momentum against him that will not stop until he has left the club, rightly or wrongly. But that's just my opinion. Let's wait and see how this season unfolds before we get the placards out and trudge wearily, once again, towards our favourite spot in the Car Park. Because three things are for certain. Rangers are no great team. Walter Smith is no great manager. And if we don't win the league this year it will be down to us, and us alone. Always the Hoops.

Some decent points there, Its bizarre after his trophy haul he still isnt convincing - MON for example didnt always play the best foobll, but over his 5 years you knew every player woulda ran through a brick wall, and most seasons we were wallopping teams by 4 and 5 every week -Strach just doesnt seem to have his motivational abilities (Given, few do). But why he sticks by guff like Hartley, only he will know - was the same for Jarosic on occasions last season, If a player is playing pish, and there are decent options elsewhere, USE THEM FFS! Rant over.

Yesterday was poor, excuses like it was the weather or we will take time to gel do not stand up.

Firstly this is Scotland and secondly strachan spent the pre season saying that it was not about results but fitness and formulating understanding in the main zones.

I think we have weaknesses that have not been adddressed from months ago and in my view that's negligence on behalf of Strachan.

Now I hope I'm 100% wrong and by Wednesday we have a top class striker, a full back and a centre half.

However, something inside me thinks that might not happen. As I say I hope I'm wrong.

We are now entering a strange phase.

The huns will get a big boost tomorrow when they enter the next round of the CL. They then entertain St Mirren and should have 6 points in the bag.

We now go to "new brockville" not an easy place to go espically with a young fit Yogi Hughes inspired team snapping at our heels for 90 minutes.

While I hope and pray we win, if we happened to slip up and draw the pressure that this will heap on the players and Strachan will be immense. Kitalba may have to avoid the blog to save his pc screen (just messing).

The game with Moscow is as many have said our summer cup final.

We should have ensured that all our plans centered on this. We should have players in now and settled who we know can take us to the financial riches of the CL. These are not here.

We are all aware of the failings from last season and to be honest as of today they have not been addressed. We have by my reckoning 48ish hours to get players in for the CL game.

Even if we did get them is everyone happy that they will have less than a week to get to know the system, tactics and players of Strachans celtic?

I can take drawing with killie, I could even take drawing with Falkirk but what really disapoints me is the apparant lack of planning regarding the CL. I say apparent as i want to be proved 100% wrong I want 3 quality signings and of course maloney.

Not much to ask for!

Hibs 1 junior huns nil.

i agree with some off the above comments but will be sticking by strachan as it is far to early in season to pass any real comment my main concern is always been the ability to win games eg score goals this team like last seasons team looks as if they may have 0ne or two goals in them a game not enough to compete at top level in europe but may be will scrape through spl its my beleaf that none of his strikers are doing the job for him this is nt the best league in the world and if they are reasonable good strikers should be hiting 20 to 30 a season and it is nt happening

As a life long Celtic supporter i agree with a lot of what has been said here. However, i disagree with quite a few things. First of all Tommy Burns never stood a chance as the huns were BUYING nine in a row during Tommy`s tenure. Secondly, if Gordon was sacked or left, who in their right mind believes the likes of Bryan Robson or Terry Venables would even be mentioned as his replacement?????...no way. I agree that Strachan seems to be a very poor motivator, but i also believe that his head is so full of football and the holy grail of absolute perfectionism that he`s lost the plot. Where is the "high tempo, attractive, attacking football" he promised us from day 1 ????. I totally agree with the original poster that the eleven "reserves" he named should be able to blow away anything in Scotland. I don`t know if any of you other bhoys/ghirls are old enough to have seen Jock Stein`s teams, but this was Big Jock`s instructions to his teams...."make sure you`re well covered at the back and attack them flat out from first whistle to last". If we were six up Jock wasn`t happy, he wanted ten!!!!. Wee Gordie is far too much into "tactics" and unless he just starts telling the players the same as the late great Jock did, then he must go before we lose our huge advantage over the huns. This is a vital time in our history, and we actually have a great chance of putting the huns out of business. Forget about big name coaches and/or managers, i genuinely believe we should appoint Stephen Kenny immediately, and bring back Davie Hay to help him for his first couple of years. I have a very strong feeling that Stephen Kenny may be the nearest thing ever to come close to Jock Stein. I`ve watched and read all about him, and i firmly believe that with the players we already have at the club, Kenny would motivate them into blowing away anything in Scotland....Hail Hail to all!!!!!.

Gordon Strachan's trophy haul over the past two season says more about the dismal state of Scottish fitba' than it does about his managerial qualities. The quality of the opposition over the past two seasons has been poor as I can remember and I've seen the very best and worst of football in Scotland since the mid-sixties. Like it or not, the huns are getting their act together and for all the are no world beaters they will present a much more formidable challenge this season than they did last season or the one before that. It should not be forgotten that they will receive every assistance from the MITBs as the prize for this season's champions is near certain qualification for the CL and its huge financial bonanza.

If the only reason you want Gordon Strachan to remain as manager is that he won 4 trophies when everyone else was more rubbish than us then you have to ask yourself will he be good enough to fend off the challenge from a rejuvenated huns? Don't forget we are talking about a manager who succeeded in getting Coventry City relegated after 30 years in the top flight. He would have managed it a season early but Coventry were saved by a 3 point deduction imposed on Middlesbrough who went down instead.

If you genuinely think Gordon Strachan is the best manager we can get and he will take us on to a new level where we can not only win trophies but play entertaining fitba' then you'll want him to stay no doubt. If on the other hand you've become increasingly alarmed at the piss poor performances on the pitch and his bizarre team selections and tactics then you like me will be glad to see the back of him as quickly possible.

The next five matches (Falkirk A, Spartak A, Aberdeen A, Hearts H and Spartak H will make or break the manager. If he gets us through this he will stay. If not he will walk of his own accord. His record at his other clubs all point to this.

I'min complete agreement with the fella that mentioned Stephen Kenny. Yesteday's game was like Groundhog Day from the last few months of last season. We showed no passion, no flair, the movement up front was non existent and I believe that there is a serious motivation problem in the dressing room. I don' think Strachan can be given much more time to get things right, last season we were poor.We will not get away with the same again this season and I believe Stephen Kenny would give a few players the boot up the ar8E that they deserve. If we do not qualify for the Champions League then I think we will be on a downward spiral this season and unless at least 3 new players are signed then I think it will be the UEFA cup this year.

hi there, you've made valid but very long points so please forgive me if you've already answered my concerns. I'm not in the entertaining football camp, i like wins. your own quote says it all:

'The other major concern is tactical. We've had two seasons of our 4-4-2 formation and while we've won two league titles with it, the problems are there for all to see'

....problems yes, but please remember the 1990's. If you witnessed these years of glorious failure (and I'm sure you did) then i hope you would not wish it on the club again.

Mick M8, I`m in the exciting/winning football camp. WGS has our players strolling around the pitch putting in as little effort as possible. You won`t see the top teams in the EPL or any other country in the world playing this "style", in fact this is the 40yr old Dutch "total football" crap which was quite quickly "found out" by opposing coaches and players, and subsequently disappeared. It worked in WGS`s first season, then every manager and coach in Scotland discovered how to negate it, and our supporters have been falling asleep in the stands at CP since. I`m in 100% agreement that we never had a better chance in our history to finish any hun challenge for at least a couple of generations, and we must do everything in our power to prevent them closing the gap on us again. I think you`re absolutely correct that no Celtic supporter can seriously expect beautiful football from us, but it`s an absolute necessity that we add excitement, aggression and total commitment to our play while winning trophies. We are already losing supporters because of this square passing, walking shite. The guy who spoke about Jock Stein said it all really. We should attack flat out straight from kick off, therefore denying the opposition even a chance to get into their stride. Something is far far wrong...for example...i don`t see one player at the huns good enough to play for our first team, yet they beat us twice last season. Less tactical shite, far more aggression, and hard boots up the arsehole are needed NOW. I agree with two previous posters...bring Stephen Kenny in now before it`s too late.

great comments.
I think wgs is too conservative/defensive in his management style. I think he has totally confused mcgeady by trying to turn him into a defender, give this guy a frer role to express the obvious talent he has for opening defences and let the defenders deal with it when he loses possession, shit you have to risk to win.
Also think that wilson has no talent going forward and if you watch him he almost always stops the ball dead before passing allowing the oposition to close him down, he in my mind is a squad player as is hartley. Big jan has done shit since he arrived and is lost outside the six yard box and play ends with him facing away from goal as he takes longer to turn than milk. We need a class striker to replace Jan, at least one attacking fullback and then we may see some football.

agree w/many of your points. I wud add that wgs is risk averse leaving us defensive minded. we may not lose many but we wont score many either and that is what we are seeing. This bullshit about defending way up the park starting with your forwards is destroying creativity, I think mcgeady is a case in point I have seen him lose confidence last season because wgs does not want him giving away possession but we have to risk it if we are to get a return and him losing possession is the price we pay for entertainment, let the defenders defend and let the attackers attack. I wud also say big jan is not producing the goods, he is good inside the box when facing goal but every game I watch he is found with back to goal because he is coming back to get the ball because he has no turn of pace to get onto through balls. We are thinking the problem is his partners but i think its him, we need a young speed merchant up front. My last moanis for wilson, he is a decent playermuch like telfer but is not celtic class. Next time you watch hime you will see that he has to stop the ball before passing this allows him to be closed down and forced to pass back so we have this backwards lateral game. We need a running fullback who can make a first time pass and then sprint forward for the return ball. wilson & hartley are celtic fans but thats not enough and they are squad players at best. So I am suggesting a center fwd and a right back to be our major problems.

I think that our current manager is digging a hole for us and despite everybody telling him to stop digging he's just carrying on anyway. He's got to go.

I believe that everyone knows what we should be doing and how we should be playing. We can all see that we should be doing a whole lot better with the players we already have, whether or not we bring in 'wow' signings.

It's difficult to criticize some of the players while WGS is still at the helm as it seems to be the case that they are carrying out his tactical instructions, rather than playing a free flowing game.

We all know that Riordan has been left out due to the impending court case, but will now be free to get back into the swing of things. if not, and he has been left out for 'training ground' reasons, then that should be enough to signal the end of WGS's tenure alone. Never mind the rest.

To a man the crowd has been behind Deek from day 1, and his record is better than any other current player. He has to be a stick on for the number 7 jersey. It's a question of: with whom should he play? Personally, i'd like to see Scott Macdonald along side him for now (and maybe Santi Esquerro in the future). We could have Miller and Jan as their replacement pairing.

Scott Brown is no right winger. Get him in the middle with Naka FFS !!! With Riordan on the right and Donati on the left (or switching about through the game as required) we'd have a dynamic and much stronger midfield. That gives us options for Sno and Gravesen as subs when we need a fine instrument or a brutal thug as and when required. Hartley is fine when we are allowed to bleedn attack, but he's fine cover for the first choice partnership.

We all know Naylor is good enough, and we all know Wilson is. We need them to play their natural flowing game. Asking them to slow it down and hold the ball up just stops them flying up the wing, wave after wave. Wilson has two speeds 1. fast, and 2. What the feck was that? Set him free from the shackles of WGS's 'tactics'!!! We need cover for these two.

In the middle, Mick and Bobo would stop everything, so we need to stop putting Presley or unfit Kennedy alongside him. We know Bobo's wages are high, but he's worth it !!! Having Caldwell and O'Dea as cover is great, but we need to punt Presley as soon as, he couldn't pass a parcel at at P7 qualification dance !!!

Given that Boruc is superb and Brown looks OK, the only further question relates to tactics.

Pretty much everyone on every fan forum, phone in, and passing you outside CP knows what we should be doing and has seen it happen. They could all lay it out for WGS very simply. It's not a question of Either good looking footbal Or winning. They are not mutually exclusive. It's about being all out for attack. Not giving the ball away and taking bleedn shots !!! We need to actually take some shots at goal to be in with a chance of scoring !!!

Strachan takes us up the pitch, then passes it around outside their box. His alternative is to get a full back to put a long ball to the corner and have either striker cut diagonall across to pick it up. Either way we have no strikers in the box and few shots on goal.

St Martin was accused of route 1 tactics, but i watched an awful lot of really slick passing and lovely football while he was in charge.

We know that we should be in their faces, but we're hanging about their shoulders. We need to be bouncing the ball about in the opposition box not in the halfway circle. They are allowed to have an 11 man defence, it's up to us to break them down. If we score, they then have to open up to equalise. That allows us to open up the floodgates. But we MUST score for that to work. Then play the fancy football.

We all know that this is true as we've seen it in various guises over the last 40 years. Some managers were able to do it, some failed, but they all tried. WGS is the exception that proves the rule.

I wanted to give him a chance and have defended him to others, but enough is enough. Bring Tony Mowbry back to where he belongs!!!

I've read the dribble that some of the posters have written & I find it quite astonishing that people are calling for the head of WGS.
This is the same man who has taken us to the last 16 of the CL & will be the most successful manager since Jock Stein in winning 3 back-to-back titles - something that MON never did.
Is it because WGS isn't a Celtic fan , Didn't play for the club or have an affiliation in any way or is Irish?
These are the same people who have these fond memories of great football under Tommy Burns & Liam Brady which was during the most dominant period for Rangers in their modern history. Obviously it's important to play attacking creative football, but just look in Leith where a footballing side who wan applause from most quarters last year won 4 games away from home & finished 6th.
Thee is a balance that we currently haven't yet struck in terms of great football, but I'd take winnign games & reachin the latter stages of Europe any day!!

I do not know anyone who is against GS because he is not "a Celtic man". I do know plenty who are against him because the product on the park - which he is 100% responsible for - is Dreadful. As dull as Dishwater. Boring, Predictable, Workmanlike. Passionles, and Unattractive.

The manner in which he represents the club when dealing with the media is equally Appalling. He is Rude, Cheeky and very very unfunny.

Nothing to do with not being "Celtic minded", everything to do with having bitten off far more than he can chew.

Saying give Gord a chance cos he's not irish and didn't play for celtic is total nonsense.

Strachan is tactically inept and simply not good enough to manage Celtic, no matter the team selections his tactics are amatuerish and when things arent going our way has he ever been able to make the changes required to change the direction of a game let alone the outcome.Losing the last two Huns games said it all.His after match interviews are appalling and as a season ticket holder I feel Ive been sitting at the wrong game when hearing him sleverring his rubbish, does he really think we are all stupid? Too many of the big names are underperforming as well and Big Jan flatters to deceive,Graveson is too big a personality for Strachan,Hartley should never have been signed.Strachans a Hibs supporter and thats about his level.By the way those who boo the team (Sunday)should stay at home,we might not be happy but we arent Rankers.Rant over

I agree, he has to go. We've had 6 months of pain watching dross being served up, whilst the guys he signed to make a difference have been flops. He is a disaster waiting to happen, If we lose to Falkirk and Spartak and follow that up with another defeat to Rangers at Ibrox, he'll go.
